hey, this blog is inactive now.. this page
has been linked to from a bunch of places
so i'll leave it here, but head over to
http://nyarlu.net/blog for current stuff =)
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I made a PC/Mac version of Forget-Me-Not. Grab it here:
Windows
OSX
It's the same basic game as the iOS version, but tweaked.. a bit harder, faster, more balanced. It's meant to be more arcadey. It has a few new enemies, things-that-happen, and MORE FRUIT. Now you can play with joysticks in front of the telly, yay!
(please forgive the horrible and quiet audio on this video.)
Hope you like it! Tell me your high scores. (tell me if it doesn't work for you.. it's been tested on a few different setups but my coding skillz aren't so hot....)
There are no bells and whistles. The keys are: P1: cursors (+ enter to join game), P2: WASD (+ tab to join game). Or joysticks... Press 'O' from the start screen to bring up the options menu, from where you can turn on joystick, fullscreen, CHUNKY MODE, etc...
Big thanks to the lovely people who helped me test it <3 and thanks to everyone who bought the iOS version or wrote about it! You make things shiny.
Najs
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOD
ReplyDeleteYEAH, OH MY GOD!
ReplyDeleteIt's doing the thing where it crashes immediately when launched under OS X 10.5.8. Any chance of a fix?
ReplyDeleteThats Awesome thanks
ReplyDeleteAlex - doh. Yeah I'll try to fix it, there's no reason why it shouldn't work on 10.5.8..
ReplyDeleteWoo, I've been waiting for a PC version forever (no iOS devices). We'll throw this up on the Ottatron for sure.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! The only weird thing is all the highscores (be it not chunky, chunky, max size at different resolutions) end up on the same list. Also, at 640*480, the top-side info of both players starts to overlap.
ReplyDeleteApart from these minor thingies: AWESOME! Bleep-bleep has never sounded and played so good. :-D Half of the time, I still don't fully understand what is going on with some of the enemies; but that's perfectly fine: brings back the feelings of figuring everything out in those old shareware titles. :-)
Crashing on 10.5.8 for me too. Looks great though.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous- ah I hadn't thought about having separate scoreboards for different settings.. could do that i guess, it makes sense...
ReplyDelete640*480, ah yeah I was hoping nobody would run it at that low >_>
<3 old shareware games. glad you like :)
~
multiple Alexes running OSX 10.5 - will try fixing it later today..
doesn't work for me under OSX 10.4
ReplyDeleteThis is innovation. Who cares about the platform.
ReplyDelete:) OSX 10.4 and 10.5 people, try this build and lemme know if it works: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2204657/NyarluLabs/Forget-Me-Not_osxtest.zip
ReplyDeleteI have 10.5.8 and the test one works for me....
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Any plans to put it on the Mac App Store?
ReplyDeletegreat, thanks sigmundfridge.
ReplyDeleteKio Dane: yeah I probably should do... might need a bit of extra polish first.
Thanks for responding so quickly to the 10.5.x folks! You rock!
ReplyDeleteCan we expect updates to the iOS version ? And if this was on the Mac App Store: *ALL OF MY PURCHASE*
ReplyDeleteI bought the iOS version, and always wished I could play with a joystick. Now, finally...
ReplyDeleteFeel free to make an Android version, BTW. ;)
I seem to just make it past a few screens - about 11,000 points.

ReplyDeleteIt's working ok for me on Lion. I'd say the one thing I would change would be letting us just type a name into the high score list instead of scrolling. Or remember the last name entered.
ReplyDeleteIt won't open for me I keep getting the "quit unexpectedly" notice (so sad) I'm running it on OS X 10.7.1 with a unibody macbook 2.4 Ghz core 2 duo, 4GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
ReplyDeleteThis is excellent news! The test version still crashes on 10.4.11, though. Such a shame, since I’m kind of dying to play it.
ReplyDeleteLogan - cool, thanks :) proper keyboard name entry would be good but is sort of a hassle due to how it all works.. remembering the previous name is a good idea.. i might tweak it to be a bit nicer in future.
ReplyDeletedying fairly quickly is normal :D this is a hard game..(and this port is much harder than the iphone original). if you want to get further, definitely learn how to "wall grind", which powers you up and lets you smash through enemies. (it's kind of hard to explain, but basically: push towards walls while moving along next to them. you'll see sparks fly out and hear a grindy sound whenever you're grinding)
check out the first video in this post http://nyarlulabs.blogspot.com/2011/08/big-fat-videos.html to see lots of wall grinding in action, it might explain it better....
glutnix: yep i'm planning on adding lots of this new stuff to the iOS one.. plus iCade support and maybe some other bits and pieces..
ReplyDeleteanonymous #1: doh :( i don't know why it might be doing that. first report i've had of it not working on 10.7.. thanks for letting me know. if i figure it out i'll update.
anonymous #2: 10.4 support, still working on it.. i've figured out why it doesn't work but i have to change some stuff to fix it.. i'll post an update soonish.
any chance of a linux port? I would love to play this on my Ubuntu PC or my Open Pandora handheld :)
ReplyDelete+1 linux please ^^ but THANK YOU for the free versions and absolutely awesome game!
ReplyDeleteThe game crashed my computer on windows due to some kind of driver error. I'm trying to figure out what happened now.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else had a similar problem?
one more q ... how to go fullscreen on osx?
ReplyDeletestarpause: press o from the start screen to bring up the options menu, change display setting to fullscreen.. i'll try making this more user friendly in a future version.
ReplyDeleteKirbyKid: oh that's a shame :( i haven't had any other reports of it crashing yet. does it happen every time, and does it give an error message? and what's your OS version /computer specs etc.. feel free to email me at nyarlulabs@gmail.com
linux version is possible yes, a friend might do a port.. i don't know for sure how well it'll work yet. playing on an Open Pandora would be cool!
Score so far, 202265. This is *really* addictive.
ReplyDeleteAlexandra - glad you're liking it! 202265, awesome. (my best so far is in the 500,000s, but of course i've played it *far* too much :D)
ReplyDeleteAt first I was like, "Oh, it's some sort of PacMan clone. Boring." But I gave it another go. And another. And more and more depth was revealed. And twenty minutes later I learned about grinding. Oh snap.
ReplyDeleteThe way it plays reminds me of Geometry Wars (with all the chaos) and ZZT (with all the different enemy types).
@nyarla

ReplyDeletework perfectly on my Windows
Some sort of twisted Pacman eh?
I like that randomization you put into the game
Great job
HERE TO BRAG ABOUT SCORE 573386!!1 ohappyday
ReplyDeleteargh! beatiing ME by 50,000 points or so! *shakes fist at BombBoy*.
ReplyDelete:D nice work!
I love your game! It's small yet addictive and fun, well done :)
ReplyDeleteOh, and I got 10499 points. I'll get more when I return to the game :)
ReplyDeleteany news on that linux port :)
ReplyDeleteTHIS RUNS PERFECTLY IN WINE.
ReplyDeleteI am happy now.
no wine for pandora :(
ReplyDeleteRunning Windows Vista SP2, my res is 1440x900 on a 17" screen with standard Intel accelerated graphics processor that shipped with the system.
ReplyDeleteGame opens in a small window where everything is blocky. Can't see what anything is, and can't read the options. I got it to go full screen somehow even though the Maximize button is disabled, but everything is still very blocky :(
I think some of the tweaks made are okay, but I miss the 'lasts forever' fruits and potions. I think only the burning flowers should disappear after some time. I do like speeding up instantly while building a grind. I haven't run into the new enemies. Also, does PC have hidden shuffle mode? I generally play that mode on iOS. Also, is there any chance that iOS will get the tweaked version? It is nice to play with a joystick finally, but I usually find myself playing games on other devices, not PC.
ReplyDeleteOh, and one more thing...on intel integrated graphics chip on my laptop, every single item has really bizzare 'blur' at top of them. it looks like top two rows of pixels for every enemy and item are pixel-blurred. If you need screenshot, let me know. This only occurs in fullscreen mode, (resolution doesn't even matter, it does this in all resolutions), not windowed.
ReplyDeleteTrying to run it on Windows 7 x64, with a quad-core AMD @ 3.2GHz, and an nVidia GeForce 8800 GT (latest drivers); it opens a small white window, then closes itself, producing no error messages or logs.
ReplyDeleteI've also tried launching it as admin, and in compatibility mode; no dice.
Not too sure how useful this information will be to you, but I was looking forward to playing it :(
hey guys, sorry i haven't been active much lately, had a bit of heavy stuff going on here, not had much time for internet/coding stuffs..
ReplyDeletei don't know why those problems might be happening.. i built FMN PC with a beta version of the code library SFML, which is still being worked on.. it's possible that re-building with a newer version will fix these probs so i'll try and do that soon and see if it helps. making stuff run on a wide variety of PC setups is certainly a bit harder than on the relatively consistent iOS :)
lostboy: the blocky thing sounds like it's not loading the .png spritesheet texture (is every sprite just a flat coloured square?). no ideas yet. hopefully a newer version of SFML will fix that too.
HS: there's no shuffle mode in the PC version, 'cos the difficulty ramps up much quicker than the iOS version i figured it wasn't really necessary.. i can add it though.
i do want to add all the PC version stuff to iOS version, along with iCade support etc. just, life getting in the way at the moment..
PS, milkshake - someone offered to attempt making a proper Pandora port. i haven't sent them the source code yet but will soon and with any luck they'll get it working!
ReplyDeleteFor the first week or so that I was playing I didn't even realize you could grind up against the walls, so my high scores were pretty low.
ReplyDeleteSince then, and up until yesterday, my high score was 606,502, but I completely blew it out of the water today. I got 4,257,329. Four million or so of that came on one stage. I ended up losing four lives on that stage because I refused to move on to the next stage, leaving all of those points I was accruing behind.
Awesome. Fullscreening it on OSX. Managed 15,292 so far.
ReplyDeleteThanks for guiding us and posting this video. Company Logo Design
ReplyDeleteOf course, there's always the random factor in this. Maybe at some point there could be rogue-like elements of special stages that are predetermined (similar to NetHack) and possibly an end? :) Then the goal is to complete the game AND get top score.
ReplyDeleteI know it's been awhile, but has there been any progress on OSX 10.4 support? This sounds right up my alley and I'm DYING to play it.
ReplyDeleteHey. Just wanted to say this game is AWESOME! I love it, and so does everyone I play it with. One minor thing, though: On my machine running Windows XP, the game's icon doesn't show, replaced with Window's general "program" icon. But when I try it on a computer running Vista, the icon is there, even with the exact same copy of the game. Why is this?
ReplyDelete@nyarla oh cool sounds great cant wait, so who offered to help port it to pandora? anyone from the op irc channel?
ReplyDeleteI like your article posting this is really nice article and very informative blog i really like your article thanks for sharing it. Food logos .
